Experiences

“Lean LaunchPad Singapore is the first step in formulating a comprehensive strategy to transit technologies into the right marketplace. By pushing our researchers to talk to potential customers, the programme enables us to understand better the customers’ needs, think more from customers’ perspective and better shape the value proposition of our technology. Our commercialisation process will become much easier.”

INSIGHTS TO IMPACTFUL INNOVATION

With real market insights, evidence-based innovation is a first step towards successful commercialisation. Under the guidance of experienced faculty and industry mentors, Lean LaunchPad Singapore provides a safe platform where teams learn quickly and “fail less”, by getting the critical success factors right:

SEARCH FOR PRODUCT-MARKET FIT

Researchers will be trained to think beyond technology to explore the market application and commercial feasibility of their technologies. Over the course of 10 weeks, teams go out to the market place, iteratively testing and validating their initial business assumptions. Until their search finds a real customer out there, willing to pay for their technology or product, often, many of their initial assumptions of the market opportunity prove to be wrong.

  • “By pushing researchers to get out of the lab and talk to potential customers, they will better understand customers’ needs, think from customers’ perspective so that they can better shape the unique value proposition that their technology will bring to the market place. With the right product-market fit, their commercialisation process will become much easier.”

    PROF WONG POH KAM

    Lead Faculty

  • “Lean LaunchPad Singapore helped us to zoom into what the best value proposition could be for a certain customer and which customer segment should we be addressing first. It helped us bridge the gap between technology and product.”

    A/Prof Hari Krishna Garg

PI of Team LuxmiTel, LLP Singapore Run 2 (2014)

  • “The idea of focusing on the market first is a very important one. It also let me find a market where the competition was weakest and helped me see how I can fill the void. That info helped prioritise my research efforts and will shave at least a few months off of development time. Without those interviews I would not have known about the market niche until after I produced a product that missed the mark. Lean LaunchPad Singapore has also changed the way I think about what I really know regarding a market.”

    Dr Jonathan Scolnick

Senior Research Fellow, EL of Team ProteoNA, LLP Singapore Run 4 (2015)

  • “The LLP Singapore programme is the first step in formulating a comprehensive strategy to transit technologies into the right marketplace. By pushing our researchers to talk to potential customers, the program enables us to understand better the customers’ needs, think more from customers’ perspective and better shape the value proposition of our technology. Our commercialization process will become much easier.”

    Assoc. Prof Hong Ming Hui

PI of Optical Nanoscopes, LLP Singapore Run 3 (2015)

  • “The ‘get out of the building’ approach is really important in gaining a deeper understanding of the complexities of how things really work in the industry. In terms of my research, I have adopted a more open approach of talking to as many practitioners as possible and as early as possible to ensure that my research is useful and implementable.”

    Asst. Prof Goh Yang Miang

PI of FPSWizard, LLP Singapore Run 3 (2015)

MINIMUM VIABLE PRODUCT (MVP) & AGILE ENGINEERING

Part of market testing involves the development of a MVP as a tangible tool to effectively communicate with potential customers and apply agile engineering in the early development of the product. Through the MVP, participants will learn how to translate their technology into a product with real benefits that customers value.

  • “I learnt that we don’t have to design the product to have all the features at the outset. We should focus on having features that are just enough to go into the market, and then to understand what the market really wants.”

    ASST. PROF RAYE YEOW

PI of Team Emosis, LLP Singapore Run 2 (2014)

NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES AND LIKE-MINDED COMMUNITY

Gain access to a group of like-minded participants, mentors and faculty in a supportive social environment. Bounce off your ideas and gain new insights with people from multiple disciplines, who bring with them a wealth of experience and transformational perspectives.

  • “Ultimately the team learned not only what was taught in the course but also about themselves, as an individual…”

    Dr Ting Dor Ngi

    Faculty, Life Science Track

  • “LLP Singapore is a great opportunity for mentors with experience and business exposure to reinforce what the instructors have shared during the sessions. With real life examples, the researchers can relate better and the impact is much much higher.”

    Mr SC Cheong, Managing Director

MDesigns Solutions, Mentor for LLP Singapore Run 3 & 4 (2015)

  • “What stood out to me were the interactions, the networks, the LLP mentors. They were REALLY proactive and willing to help. I am very touched and grateful by their sincerity and helpfulness, and the insight and information that they provided us with during the interviews. Some mentors really went the extra mile to identify potential customers and helped linked us up via email, which turned out to be very helpful contact points.”

  • “As a mentor, the ability to impart experiences to the teams (and learn a little from my teams too!) in order to give them perspective of what they can achieve with a little bit of additional knowledge and connectivity to others in the same area of interest. It is gratifying to see how the teams change over time in terms of their ability to see past their prejudices and pre-conceived notions by talking to real potential customers and learning from potential competitors.”

  • “The hands-on approach, flipped classroom experience, and the ability to experiment and learn (exponentially!) in a nurturing environment. It’s also a great way to meet like-minded scientist-entrepreneurs. LLP also lets you have access to mentors of different background and experience. With the informal interaction, collegiate atmosphere and open learning environment, it allowed me to build invaluable connections, and provided the chance to meet and speak to a lot of very interesting people who I would not have encountered before.”
